What exactly does FPS mean?

This is by far the most persistent misconception about Gel Blasters, so let’s set the record straight right away. A heavier battery doesn’t make your Blaster shoot harder. It just makes it fire faster in rapid succession.
The power of a shot is determined by the spring in the gearbox. That spring pushes the piston forward and determines how much air is forced behind the BB. That’s what determines your FPS. A common assumption is that a pistol is weaker than a rifle, or that a sniper rifle, by definition, shoots the farthest. That’s not true. The shape of a Blaster has nothing to do with what’s inside it.
What does matter are the spring in the gearbox, the airtightness, the barrel, and the ammunition. A compact model with a strong spring and a good seal shoots faster than a large model that leaks air. Therefore, always look at the specified values for the specific model you have in mind, not the category it falls into.
What determines your Blaster’s FPS?
FPS isn’t a fixed characteristic that stays the same forever. It’s the result of several components working together, and that value drops if something isn’t right.
The spring and the gearbox
This is the determining factor. A heavier spring provides higher FPS, but also puts more strain on all the other components. This is also the only factor manufacturers actually use to specify a model’s power.
Air Tightness
Any air that escapes past the piston head or the nozzle does not end up in the BB. A blaster with a poor seal loses power even if nothing is broken. This is the most common reason why FPS decreases over time.
The barrel
A longer barrel gives the air more time to accelerate the BB, up to a certain point. If the barrel becomes too long relative to the cylinder’s volume, friction actually slows the BB down again. A dirty barrel with gel residue always causes a loss of velocity.
The ammunition

Temperature
In cold weather, rubber seals become stiffer. As a result, the same Blaster fires slightly less powerfully on a winter day than in the summer. This is normal and not a defect.
What doesn’t affect your FPS: the battery, the motor, a larger magazine, or a heavier-looking body. These factors influence your rate of fire and your comfort while playing, not the power of a shot.
How far does a Gel Blaster shoot?
Here, it’s important to distinguish between two types of range, as they’re often confused.
- Maximum range: the distance the pellet still travels. You no longer have any control over where it lands.
- Effective range: the distance at which you can still accurately hit a target. This is the only distance that matters while playing.

Why more FPS doesn’t always mean more range
A gel ball is soft and fragile. If you put too much force behind it, it will fall apart before it even reaches the gearbox or the barrel. The result is a cloud of moisture instead of a shot, and thus actually less range.
