What is a Gel Blaster?

A Gel Blaster is an electrically powered toy weapon that fires small, water-absorbing gel balls, also known as Orbeez, water beads or hydrogel pellets. They are similar to airsoft weapons, but fire completely safe, biodegradable pellets that burst on impact and do not hurt. In this article, we explain everything: what a Gel Blaster exactly is, how it works, what types there are and who it is suitable for.

How does a Gel Blaster work?

A Gel Blaster works on the basis of an electrically powered spring spring. When you pull the trigger, a built-in motor drives a piston that compresses air and shoots the gel ball forcefully through the barrel. This works similarly to an airsoft weapon, but instead of hard plastic pellets, a Gel Blaster uses soft, water-filled gel pellets that cause no damage.

Most Gel Blasters at GelWapens.nl run on a rechargeable 7.4V lithium battery and are fully automatic: as long as you keep the trigger pulled, the weapon keeps firing. Some models also have a semi-automatic mode for controlled, accurate firing. View the full Gel Blaster assortment.

Electric prime function

Some models have an electric prime function: a mechanism that automatically loads the first gel ball into the chamber when the Blaster is switched on, without you having to do it manually. This ensures smoother operation and fewer misfires, which is useful for players who want to get started right away without hassle.

What are gel balls?

Gel balls, also known as Orbeez, water beads or hydrogel pellets, are the ammunition of a Gel Blaster. They consist of a superabsorbent polymer. When dry, they are only 1-2 mm small; after soaking in water for at least 5 hours, they grow into 7.5-8 mm soft, water-filled pellets.

On impact, they burst into water and leave no visible stains on clothing or surfaces. They are biodegradable and completely safe for outdoor use. View the full gel balls assortment.

Colored gel balls

The most commonly used variant, perfect for entry-level and mid-range models. Available in blue and orange in packs of 10,000 to 100,000 pieces.

Glow in the Dark gel balls

Glowing gel balls visible in the dark, ideal in combination with a tracer for spectacular light effects. Available in packs of 10,000 to 100,000 pieces.

Premium gel balls

Heavier and harder than standard gel balls. They can withstand the pressure of powerful weapons better and provide a more stable flight path. Specially designed for high-end Gel Blasters such as the ARP9 and Kriss Vector.

On average, you use 1,000-3,000 gel balls per 30-minute play session. For regular use, a pack of 50,000 or 100,000 pieces is the most cost-effective per shot.

Gel Blaster vs. Airsoft vs. Paintball

Many people look for a Gel Blaster as an alternative to airsoft or paintball. These are the main differences:

Gel Blaster Airsoft Paintball
Ammunition Water-absorbing gel ball Plastic pellet (6mm BB) Paint-filled color pattern
Leaves stains? No, bursts apart in water No Yes
Legal requirements None (with CE marking) Age restriction + rules None
Pain on impact Barely Noticeable Painful without protection
Eco-friendly Yes, biodegradable No, plastic Partial
Ammunition cost Low Low-medium High

Gel Blasters have risen sharply in popularity in recent years, and for good reason. You do not need a membership, no special permit is required, and you do not have to worry about paint stains on clothing or surfaces.
